This issue is also very common, especially in older people. Researchers report that about 19% of men and about 29% of women are likely to develop hip osteoarthritis. In its final stages, this issue is treated with a type of surgery called a total hip replacement, and it’s reported that more than 300,000 hip replacements occur in the U.S. annually. Physical therapy can help people heal after a hip replacement; further, physical therapists can also help people avoid specific exercises after their hip replacement. 

These four exercise types should be avoided while you’re healing from a hip replacement

Therapeutic exercises are an important component of post-hip replacement physical therapy plans. Such exercises are intended to reduce post-surgical pain. They can also improve function and increase the strength of muscles that move and stabilize the hip. One study reports that an eight-week therapeutic exercise program significantly increased hip muscle strength. This included an almost 48% increase in hip extensor strength. 

However, there are some exercises that you should avoid after a hip replacement. Most therapists and doctors recommend avoiding exercises that require you to:

  • Bend your hip past 90 degrees (deep squats, lunges, knee-to-chest stretch)
  • Cross one leg over the other (figure four stretch)
  • Turn your foot inward (ankle rotations)
  • Raise your leg to the side (side leg raises)
