Virtual Physical Therapy Services
As of March 2020, people across the country and the world are isolating themselves as part of a global effort to suppress the spread of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). In the previous months, this threat seemed distant and appeared to be under control but the reality we know now is that people must take serious precautions to avoid contracting this novel virus and to help prevent its spread to others.
At Arrow Physical Therapy, we take the threat of the coronavirus very seriously and want to prioritize the safety of our patients and our staff. As a result, we are offering virtual care services as an alternative to in-clinic visits so our team can continue to treat your aches and pains while you remain in your home.
That’s right. Despite the social distancing that everyone is being encouraged to practice these days, you can still receive the quality physical therapy services you need from the comfort and safety of your own home. Of course, virtual therapy is a little different than in-clinic physical therapy, so let’s take a closer look at what this service is like.
What is Virtual Therapy?
Virtual therapy, also known as teletherapy or telehealth physical therapy, refers to any physical therapy services that are performed through remote connection via the internet. At Arrow Physical Therapy, we achieve this connection through the HIPAA-compliant BetterPT platform.
BetterPT is a secure video communication platform designed with virtual physical therapy services in mind. The program doesn’t require the patient to download any app to access the video communication.
Using BetterPT, you can communicate directly with your physical therapist face-to-face in real time. Of course, though this medium, therapists will not be able to administer the hands-on techniques they normally would be able to use in an in-clinic session but they can still guide you through live therapeutic exercises and stretches while monitoring your progress, encouraging your efforts and tweaking your routine as necessary.
The BetterPT platform allows for more than live virtual therapy sessions. Using this program, you can also:
- Request an evaluation
- Add relevant patient information such as medical history and injury updates
This technology will be useful for most of our current patients who need to continue their therapy services despite the need for social distancing. New patients can also schedule a consultation. Talk to our team today about virtual therapy if you need physical therapy for:
- Continued therapy services for existing patients
- Chronic pain management for aches and pains
- Post-operative recovery
- Orthopedic injuries
For a virtual therapy session, you’ll need three main things: yourself, comfortable clothing and a device that connects to the internet and offers video communication, such as a laptop, smartphone or a desktop with a webcam. Please see our FAQs section for a reminder on what to wear and what to expect from a typical virtual therapy session.
It’s important to follow these best practices for an optimal virtual therapy session:
- Check your email for telehealth appointment confirmations and reminders.
- Ensure you have a stable internet or cellular data connection.
- Ensure your device has a functioning camera, microphone and speaker.
- Ensure your device can operate hands-free. You’ll need to be able to focus on your therapy without worrying about operating a communication device. If you’re using a smartphone or a tablet, find something secure that you can prop your device up against.
- Create a well-lit, spacious setting in your home. Remove any obstacles or potential tripping hazards from your home therapy area.
It’s also important beforehand to ensure that your device’s internet browser is compatible with BetterPT technology. Please see the following chart for reference of compatible browsers:
|Chrome||Safari||Firefox||IE 10 & later versions||Opera|
