Shoulder Pain Treatment

Shoulder injuries are not talked about as much as they should be. They aren’t commonly known, like lower back pain, and they don’t make the sports headlines like ACL tears. But the shoulder is one of the most common areas of injury on the body.

Think about your daily activities. Did you bend over to put on shoes this morning? Brush your hair? Pull on a pair of pants? All of those tasks require shoulder movement. And while shoulder injuries can be caused by sudden impact from a fall or from sports, most often shoulder injuries result from constant wear and tear of the joint. This is called natural degeneration, and it’s common as we age.

At Arrow Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation in Union, New Jersey, we offer several treatment options to help reduce the pain of a shoulder injury. We focus on relieving your pain and restoring the strength and range of motion in your shoulder. Take a moment to learn more about shoulder pain and how we can help treat your condition. What causes shoulder pain to develop?

While sudden collision or impact (due to a sport or accident) can cause shoulder damage, often the more common cause of shoulder pain is continued use over the years.

The shoulder is a joint. Like all joints, it is protected with a thick layer of cartilage to keep the bones from rubbing against each other as the shoulder rotates. Over the years, this cartilage may wear down, leaving the bones with no protection. When this happens, inflammation in the joint may occur, which can cause pain and stiffness, as well as limited mobility if left untreated.

Additionally, shoulder injuries may develop from a torn ligament. This is common in athletes who do no stretch properly before playing, or overuse their shoulder to the point of exhaustion. If the ligaments surrounding the shoulder tear, it could cause inflammation to develop. It could also cause excessive scar tissue to build up as the ligament attempts to repair itself. Both cases may lead to pain and stiffness.
